Text-Based Adventure Game Assessment

  1. Existing Text-based adventure games

    • Hitchhikers Guide To The Gaalxy
      • This game appears centred around a science-fiction setting using brightly low colour and 3 dimensional imagery
        • Negative aspects include the use of unclear directions, the acceptance of specific inputs, and failing to identify uses of language
        • Positives aspects includes the use of bright colours and imagery, uniquely detailed outputs, and the ability to use a range of responses
    • Colossal Caves (2023)
      • Colossal Caves is an exploration-themed game where it presents vivid colour and imagery of the user exploring a vast cave system, rumoured to have gold and treasure.
        • Positives of the game include effectively, descriptive outputs, use of engaging music and sound effects, and appealing imagery and colours
        • Negatives aspects include the short-length playthrough, lack of proper guidance, and no clear illustration of plot
  2. Algorithm Constructs

    • Iteration
      • Iteration is the repetition of coding functions
        • Rotate D motor for 11 seconds, Move forward for 20cm, Rotate D motor for 11 seconds, Move forward for 20 cm
    • Selection/Condition
      • Selection/Conditions is where variables are provided a condition, which is followed by designated responses if or if not met.
        • If Escape_choice == ("Stairs"): print("You quickly bolt down numerous flights of stairs")
    • Assignment
      • Assignment refers to the assignment of particular values within a variable
        • Carnival_choice == ("Ferriswheel"), Education choice == ("University")
    • Sequence
      • Sequence refers to the step-by-step order of coding structure
        • START - While distance > 30cm: Turn left, rotate C motor 110 degrees, reverse for 5 seconds, Activate sound effect - END
  3. Coding Constructs

    • Variables
      • Variables are python terms that appear textual, assigned with a relating worded or numerical values
        • y = 43, Trader_choice == "accept"
    • ELIF Statements
      • Elif Statements are python terms that provide an additional condition to a variable before Else.
        • If path_choice = "Forest":, Elif path_choice = "Cliffs":, else: "Swamp'
    • While Loops
      • While loops are pseudocode terms that state the function is active while a specific condition is met
        • While Health > 15: strength = "Great"
    • break statements
      • break statements are python terms that immediately end the program from continuing.
        • print("You encounter a wild beast") / print("You attempt to run away, but ultimately captured") / break
  4. Ideas for story

    • A theme of Horror, mystery
      • The user strays off a mountain trail and finds themselves to choose between an abandoned mansion filled with secrets, and a dull marsh land with twists around every corner
        • Elements of the plot include unknown creatures of spirits and witches, unnerving language and setting uses, and fitting theme representations.
    • Island Survival, action
      • The user awakens from a plane crash and must brave the many dangers in order to survive, hunting in the wild to quench their hunger.
        • Elements of the plot include the actions of harvesting, hunting, and crafting, caution of hunger and health counters, and strict language.
  5. Task Requirements

    • Prescribed Criteria
      • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
        • Cariables must be written in proper format (= input, not ==)
        • Variables cannot be repeated, like choosing roads
        • All variables presentmust add up to ten.
      • You must have at least two choices for each input.
        • Each variable must present 2 or more options that differ from one another
        • They must range from repeated or simple choices like left and right
        • The User input should be inserted appropriately to the following options.
      • You must use a WHILE Loop
        • Use at least one while loop within the structure
        • The while loop must be effectively implemented and adjusted.
        • All coding arranged in the while loop must not leave.
      • You must use variables that match your storyline
        • Ensure that variables are clearly relevant to the plot.
        • Do not use variables unnecessarily.
        • Does this variable support the plot and add need of decision to the user?
    • Self-determined Criteria
      • Expand the structure of the story
        • Include Nested If statements to further explore branches of the plot
        • Use Elif statements to apply additional options for choices
        • Use more variables to provide different story directions
      • Inclusion of colour and imagery
        • apply ASCII techniques to create fitting images of the setting and characters.
        • Apply ANSI techniques to add particularly appealing colour to text
        • Ensure that use of colour and imagery is used to emphasise a specific point in the story
