Disk organisation

Disk organisation

1. File transfer

   • The ability to transfer data from one location to another

2. Formatting

   • The process of preparing a disk for use
   • All data may be erased to prepare the disk for new data to be stored

3. Compression

   • The process of making a file size smaller
   • Allows more data to be stored on the disk
   • Files may be transferred more quickly
   • Software based - readily available, yet slows down the process of reading and writing to disk
   • Hardware based - requires specialist hardware that may be expensive, although doesn't greatly affect speed of access
   • Disc based compression is always lossless
