1. Sutherland defined white collar crime as 'a crime commited by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his ocupation

   • He said crime was a working class problem, the financial cost of wcc was prob several times greater the cost than working class crime

2. two types of white collar crime

   • Occupational - crimes commited at the expense of the organisation e.g employees stealing money
   • Corporate crime - crimes committed on behalf of the organisation e.g non payment of VAT
   • Some researchers identify a 3rd type of white collar crime, state crime this involves crimes committed by the state such as police
