What is Science?
- Science is a process and a way of observing, thinking and knowing living and nonliving things in the universe. It is also the body of knowledge we get from this.
- Ecology
- The biological science that studies how organisms or living things interacy with their environment and with each other
- Chemistry
- Study of chemicals and their interactions
- Biochemistry
- Study of chemistry of living things
- Earth Science
- Study of the planet as a whole and its nonliving systems
- Climatology
- Study of the Earth's atmosphere and climate
- Social Sciences
- Studies of human society
- Humanities
- Study of the aspects of the human condition not covered by the physical and social sciences
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Study of Living Things
- Botany
- The study of plants
- Zoology
- The study of animals
- The biological science that studies how organisms or living things interacy with their environment and with each other
Commons
- Something shared between people that no one owns
Unsustainable
- The condition of being unable to continue at its current rate
Tragedy of The Commons
- When almost no one is caring for the commons and instead of taking the blame people just pass it along
The Law of Unintended Consequences
- Actions that have an unexpected effect
Views
- Ecocentrism
- Nature over man
- Environmental WIsdom Worldview
- Man is one of many species and we have no more rights than any other creature- we all have equal rights
- Environmental WIsdom Worldview
- Nature over man
- Anthropocentrism
- Man over Nature
- Planetary Management Worldview
- Earth is for man to do whatever you see fit that will fulfill your needs and what will benefit you the most
- Planetary Management Worldview
- Man over Nature
- Balance
- Stewardship Worldview
- Humans manage the earth- do it so we can continue to meet human needs in an ethical and sustainable way
- Stewardship Worldview
- Ecocentrism
Caring About Creation Problems
- Overpopulation
- Habitat Loss
- Climate Change
- This is caused because of all of the greenhouse gas emission in the atmosphere
- Environmentalist/Secular P.O.V.
- The result is a thicker atmospheric blanket that will prevent heat from escaping. We are in danger of habitat destruction, catastrophic flooding, and destructive droughts. The UN and US are pressuring people to take actions to help save the planet from diseaster
- Creation/Christian Perspective
- The earth was designed with man in mind, therefore the world is prepared for the damage man does. God designed multiple systems to bring healing to places that have been damaged by human activity as well as natural diseaster. Also the increased production of CO2 increases the plants' resistance to disease and predators. This has also increased the health of ecosystems and improved agricultural productivity
The Progressive Era-Late 1800s-Early 1900s
- Loss of commons
- Logging, hunting etc
- Teddy Roosevelt- Conservation Movement
- Prevent destruction of the commons

Problems
- Hetch Hetchy
- Man vs. Nature
- Originally this valley was maintained by the Native Americans and it was protected by the government. Then the government decided to turn the valley into a resevoir and a water system. Many people are still against this decision and believe that the water should be taken out that way Hetchy Hetch can be returned to it's former beauty.I think that the proper solution would be to leave the dam the way it is and continue using it in order to fuel the lives of the people of San Francisco. It would simply be too complicated to empty out the resevoir in a safe and way that isn't incredibly expensive in order to attempt restoring the valley. It is in the perfect location and supplies the water needed.
- Man vs. Nature
- Bhopal
- Man vs. Man
- In Bhopal,India there was an incident involving a company called Union Carbide and a gas leak ocurred. This gas leak killed thousands some immediately and others shortly after. An devastating amount of people were severely injured by this event. The company did make an attempt at repaying the citizens but it wasn't enough. I think that the company did not handle this situation well at all. Even though they attempted to reimburse the damages that they caused toward the citizens the money given wouldn't have gotten much. THe injuries that were caused need incredibly expensive treatment and even thogh it seems like the citizens were paid a good amount each it wouldn't have covered or healed much.
