The Research Process

Project Requirements: Topic guidelines, paper length,

source types, citation style, due date, etc.

Topic selection: General subject area, options within

area, narrowed topic.

Background Research: Starting point, determining

keywords, help make in-depth research better, uses encyclopedias, websites,

non-scholarly sources, etc.

Thesis/Research question: Turn topic into question to answer,

then determine you answer, which you want to prove in your essay/presentation,

a.k.a. your thesis statement

In-depth Research: uses Library and database searches,

scholarly articles, etc.

Evaluating: Review research sources, reevaluate

research process, etc.

Writing: Collect notes and synthesize you

research to back ideas, cite, etc
