Nominal: separate categories eg. male and female. dogs and cats
Ordinal: arranged in order eg. the size of a dog/t shirt
Interval: arranged in order but the order has a meaning eg. gender on a continuum
Ratio: 12.75 years old
A census looks to the entire population
