Resource Identification- Project Noah
Resource Cost - Free
Rating- I would rate this app/site a 9 because it seems to be a great way for students to get engaged with nature, become explorers, read about life all across the planet, and it relates science directly to the students life as they actively participate in research. I explored the site for quite a while, watched youtube videos on it, and made an account but I did find that it was somewhat difficult to figure out for a first time user. I'm sure that once I get more familiar with the site, I would give it a higher rating. Another reason I rated it so highly is that searching for specific species or topics is very easy and there are already constructed lesson plans that teachers can use that align with the standards for science and even language arts! This site is engaging for all ages and definitely makes me want to explore the life across the planet.
Description- Project Noah is a web-based site that can be used on the computer, tablet, or phones. It allows students to get involved in nature and in their community, and contribute to local research by posting things that they find in nature or by posting an unknown organism and asking for an identification from others. This app lets all students set into the role of scientists in their local communities. You can have your students follow certain people or topics, read posts about the life found almost anywhere, and maybe help another user identify a plant or animal. The app allows you to join, or create a classroom to manage your students and create or join a “mission” for exploration. Creating a mission allows you to create an assignment for your students to participate in and explore. Not only does this app allow students to view or participate in missions, but students can also read about many difficult life science concepts and join other peoples missions. There are pre created missions you can have your students join on topics like, what's in my backyard, symbiotic relationships, and mimetic animals of the world. Your missions also connect to google earth so that students can visualize exactly where that plant or animal was spotted. Project Noah also provides some amazing lesson plans that align with the state standards. Whether your classroom is curious as to what type of spider if living in the corner of the classroom or what fungi can be found in Egypt, Project Noah is there to engage students and to help them explore.
Alignment to Goal-Project Noah allows you to organize your classroom, individualize learning, and engage your students in life science. This site/app is great for assigning students to read about a specific topic from scientists and explorers all over the world. If you are studying any topic in life science, chances are Project Noah has a lot of research on it and allows the students to be interactive with the research and other explorers as well as develop their own research. Project Noah can help students learn about difficult concepts in life science and it provides great images and they can even comment on the topic entries. As a teacher, you can create a mission for your students and enter specific goals and instructions for your students.
