substitution allows benzene to retain delocalised system of pi-electrons thus stability
high electron density above and below plane of benzene ring - ring is liable to attack from electron-deficient atom/group
groups - called electrophiles
the sub of hydrogen on ring by another atom/group is called ELECTROPHILIC SUBSTITUTION
