ROOSTER
Sound
Fully describe how sound is used in Rooster
The Music in Rooster, from the excerpt has two songs, "little red rooster blues" and "Lady Jane". All the songs are performed by the rolling stones with Mick Jagger as the lead singe. Both songs are rock n roll blues however "little red rooster" is more bluesy and "Lady Jane" is a bit slower and a lot less rock n roll. During Little red rooster all 5 male dancers are on stage but the sole focus is on the lead male dancer in the front. The music says "I am the little red rooster" and so we identify the male dancer with both the rooster and Mick Jagger who is singing the lyrics. All of the songs in ROOSTER are from only the 60's era and only the rolling stones so that it clearly represents that era. The Music was chosen by Bruce before he started to choreograph (unlike most contemporary dances) and so was able to choreograph and take cues from the music. His movements are often mimetic of the music for example when the music (little red rooster) has 5 quick sharp strums of an electric guitar that sound is similar to a dogs bark. The dancer juts his head out on each of these strums imitating a dog barking and so mimicking the music. He also uses the music from 'Lady Jane' to take the cue for a new female dancer when a new lady is introduced in the song. The first song is also more energetic and and the dancer has energetic and sharp movements where as "Lady Jane" is slower and so the movements are more fluid. Each song in the entire piece introduces a new idea about the relationship between men and women in the 60's. For example the very first song represents the relationship where the men believe they can control the women and only care about themselves and the way they look, while the women try and get their attention. The second song introduces the idea where women are modest and have more control over the men than the men realise however the men still cast aside each women when a new one comes along.
How does the choice of sound and its use help to convey the ideas and themes introduced in rooster?
The music for the first dance introduces the theme of the alpha male. Mick Jagger is the lead singer of the rolling stones and is sort of like the "alpha male" in the group as he acts very cocky on stage and walks around like he owns it, like an alpha male rooster would in a barnyard. Also the words "I am the little red rooster" implies that there is only one red rooster and that is referred to the lead male dancer who is the alpha male in the dance and the representation of the cocky Mick Jagger. It also introduces the theme of "the party" which is where in the 60's the males and females would dance in night clubs. It shows this as the rolling stones were popular in the 60's and a lot of their music was played in the night clubs and so we identify their music to "the party" and so enhancing this theme.
How does the choice of sound enhance the overall performance for the audience- give specific examples from the excerpt you have watched.
