- Part of the Republic of Ecuador, it is an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed on both sides of the equator in the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the center of the western hemisphere, 906 km (563 miles) west of continental Ecuador. The islands are known for their large number of endemic species and were studied by Charles Darwin during HMS Beagle's second voyage. His observations and collections contributed to the beginning of Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection.

Often, over the millions of years that chance brought birds in a storm, sea lions and penguins in currents, seeds across from the continent, the first life to remain would have been "pioneer" species.Certainly, many of the initial arrivals to the islands did not come at an opportune time: at a time without a mate to greet them, without a plant to feed on, without a bit of soil to put down roots.
