  1. Peer to Peer networks.

    • In a peer to peer network all computers are of equal status, this means that no single computer can access or do things that another cant. peer to peer networks are most commonly used in peoples houses. these networks tend to work best within a range of 10 to 15 devices. A disadvantage of this system is that there is no central management or memory meaning that it is sometimes unclear where your work is actually stored and saved meaning that if one computer becomes corrupted or damaged work could be lost, there is also little security on this kind of network. Another problem with these networks is that they can perform with roughly a maximum of 15 P.C's.
    • Advantages of a peer to peer network is that there are low operating costs and they are easier to run and maintain. they are also non reliant on a central server once again lowering costs.

  2. Client server network.

    • These are preferred choice for people who need large networks such as companies and schools. in these sort of networks one computer is more powerful than the others and has a higher level of status and priority. this computer is where all the programs and files are stored this computer is called the server and is usually controlled and operated by a person known as a network manager. there are two main types of topology for these networks they are known as star networks and ring networks.

  3. Star Networks

    • Star networks use a central connection point to connect all other devices on the network. this connection point can be a hub, switch or a router. this form of network is usual used by large organisations and is a popular topology for WAN's. Advantages of this network include , if one of the 'spokes' (cables) goes down to others can still function making the fault easy to identify, it is easy to add extra devices as all devices have a direct link to the HUB meaning that no performance is lost. Disadvantages, this network has higher costs as you have to pay for more cabling. this type of network also has dependence on a central HUB meaning that if tat fails so does the rest of network.

  4. Ring Network.

    • In A ring network all the computers are arranged in a circle. data is sent around the entire network until it reaches the right computer. this network is usually used on a small scale in peer to peer networks such as in someone house. the advantages of this network include, that is it not dependant on a central computer and that each computer has the exact same access as all the others meaning that none of the computers can 'hog' the network. Disadvantages include that if one point in the connection breaks so does the entire network, faults are difficult to locate and that you cannot add devices while the network is running as there is only one path for data to travel throu.gh

  5. Bus Network

    • In a Bus network all of the devices are connected by a shared cable known as the backbone on which signals can be passed in either direction. advantages of this form of network is that they are cheaper than other networks as less cabling is needed., one cable makes it easier to install and it is easy to add new devices to the network.. Disadvantages include that they can only hold up to 12 computers without decreasing performance and that if there is a break in the network to whole network will go down.

  6. Wireless networks.

    • Wireless networks use radio waves to transmit data to and from devices. these networks allow people to connect to the internet or a LAN meaning that they can work anywhere that they can get a radio signal.. To set up a small WiFi network several things are required, a broadband connection to the internet, a router and a WiFi enabled computer.
    • Advantages: Removes the cost of cabling.
    • Allows people to work anywhere they have a signal.
    • You can use it all over the world.
    • Disadvantages:It consumes a large amount of power and device batteries.
    • There are possible health problems.
    • Security is an issue even when encrypted.
    • Home networks have a limited range (150ft)
    • can obtain interference if networks overlap.

  7. Network management software.

    • ´This software
    • is in charge of controlling all devices on the network. It carries out a
    • variety of roles-
    • ´Making sure
    • all computers have up to date security software.
    • ´Making sure
    • that all software is licenced and legal.
    • ´Keeping all
    • software up to date.
    • ´Providing
    • remote control facilities for It support.
    • ´Monitoring
    • processing power and storage of computers on the network.
    • Some examples
    • of this software would be UNIX, Linux and Novell.
  8. User accounts and logs

    • ´Any one who
    • uses a network uses a user account, this account is created by the network
    • manager. The network manger will allocate each account with certain access
    • rights and permissions. All users can are able to change there password,
    • desktop settings and mange there own files.
    • ´The network
    • manger can then decide weather that user has access certain software or shared
    • files.
    • ´User logs are
    • how a user logs in and out of the system. It also provides an audit trail to
    • find out which accounts logged on to which P.C.
  9. Security strategies.

    • Use of password and user ID's is essential on a network to stop people from gaining unauthorised access to work.. Many networks also use virus detecting software to help protect there networks.
    • one of the best things that a network manager can do to secure there network is to encrypt there network meaning that there data can be kept secure when being sent over the internet.
    • Many networks also use firewalls to protect there network from hackers.
  10. Configuration management.
