Correlational study: see if they are related but not a cause and effect
Experimental will tell cause and effect
All experiments are studies
Not all studies are experiments
Experiments
Independent variable manipulated
To determine its effect on a dependent variable
Happiness can be confused as fear
Men fall in love more quickly than women
Birds of a feather flock together means similarity is more important
While opposites attract they don't have as happy of relationships
Anecdotal evidence
personal experience information; you like your car so you think all cars like that are perfect
vs.
Empirical evidence
Social psychologists are interested in context and behavior
Don't do clinical work, therapy
Generally, psychologists need to have a doctorate
Introvert vs. Extrovert
"I am at a party, in the corner talking to the cat" (introvert)
Professors seem to be extroverts from their ability to talk in front of classes
Depending on the situation--who you are, who you are with, what you are doing, where you are--can change how you act

Experimental: manipulate things/variables
Observational: observe things
Peer Review: evidence based research/practices
Really want to know if the treatment is helping more than it hurts
Need to have reliable sources
Look at observational methods
(covert vs overt)
Know pros and cons
Overt=the people know they are being watched
If you manipulate a variable you can find out if it causes anything--correlational does not do this
Independent: the one the researcher manipulates
Dependent: the one the researcher measures
Know each design and the pros and cons of each method
Ethics trumps science!!
Can't do it if it hurts someone
