- Explain how elements are classified as metals and non-metals.
- Use patterns to classify an element as a metal or a non-metal.
- In the Periodic Table, there are two main categories - Metals and Non-metals. There is a stepped line on the Periodic Table to show whether elements are metals or non-metals. The stepped line looks a bit like like steps. Elements on the left of the stepped line are metals. Most elements are metals. Elements on the right of the stepped line are non-metals.
- Metals and non-metals have different properties. You can tell whether an element is a metal or non-metal by its properties.
- Not all elements fit the pattern. Some elements called metalloids (which are elements next to the stepped line) have properties of a metal and of a non-metal.

-
- Use patterns to predict properties of elements.
- Compare patterns in the groups and periods of the periodic table.
- In the Periodic Table, the vertical columns are called groups. The horizontal rows are called periods.
- There are patterns in the properties between the groups and periods.
