Agamemnon

Epithets – wide-ruling, godlike, lord of men

Book 1

v

Angry –he was so aggressive to the point where

him and Achilles’s fight had to be split up by Athena

v

Selfish – steals Briseis

v

Arrogant – thinks he deserves the best prize

v

Strict – wouldn’t return Chryseis

v

Unrelenting – humiliates Achilles by taking Briseis

Book 3

v

Demanding – Agamemnon demands that the Trojans give Helen

back because Menelaos won the duel between him and Paris

v

Well respected - when he speaks everyone is

silent

v

Impactful - Helen picks out Agamemnon, along

with Odysseus and Ajax, in battle and Priam, King of Troy marvels at his

strength and skill in battle.

Book 4

v

Encouraging – he leads his army in the

preparations for battles with confidence

v

Caring – shows compassion and concern for his

brother Menelaos

Book 6

v

Brutal

– Menelaus considers accepting a ransom in return for the life of Adrestus, a

Trojan he has subdued, but Agamemnon persuades him to kill the man outright.

Book 9

v

Defeated/disheartened – Agamemnon weeps and declares the war

a failure.

v

Intelligent

– chose Embassy tactically

Book 11

v

Powerful – fights so well + kills so many that

the Gods advise the Trojans to hold back and fight defensively until Agamemnon

is injured

v

Persistent & determined – continues fighting

and kills Koon even after he is wounded

Book 16 -

Book 18 -

Book 19

v

Immature – blames his actions of stealing Briseis

on Zeus and Fate instead of accepting responsibility and apologising sincerely

v

Stubborn – he refuses to accept responsibility

for his actions

v

Honourable – still gives Achilles the gifts he

had previously offered

v

Generous – Achilles is set on coming back to war

with or without Agamemnon’s gifts so Agamemnon is generous to still give him

everything

v

Authoritative - at the beginning of the speech

he silences the men and asks them to pay close attention to what he is saying

v

Manipulative – he apologises to Achilles so he

appears to be remorseful but he doesn’t actually admit fault so it is not a

proper, genuine apology like Achilles’ was.

v

Lazy – he does not offer to help to fetch the

gifts for Achilles but he just sends his servants to get them all

v

Unfocused - he does not strategize a battle plan

but rather recites a story about Zeus and the goddess of blindness which,

ultimately, will not help them when they shortly return to war

v

Determined – eager to convince everyone that he

is innocent in the situation with Achilles by blaming the goddess of blindness

and using the story of how she blinded Zeus to reiterate his point

v

Appreciative – he is considerate of Achilles’

skills in battle as he admits that he is a strong asset to the Achaian army and

they are more likely to win when he is fighting alongside them

Book 22 -

Book 23

v

Skilled – the spear throwing competition does

not even occur as it is obvious that he would win

Book 24 -
