Quantitative Analysis

• Structured questionnaires that collect patient reported outcomes (PRO's) are the most common type of quantitative measures = provide numerical data to be analyzed statistically.

Categories of Measures in HCAHPS:

• Communication with nurses
• Response of hospital staff
• Communication with doctors

• Communication about medicine
• Discharge information
• Overall rating of hospital
• Patient information and demographics
• Other i.e. by Press Ganey: Admission room, meals, nurses, test and treatments, visitors and family, physicians and discharge.
• Other i.e. by Picker: information and education, coordination of care, physical comfort, emotional support, patient preferences, etc.

Qualitative Analysis

• Moves away from structured questions through open ended questions in which patients can describe their experiences in their own words.
• Examples: focus groups and interviews.
