- 1GUIThis is an acronym and it stands for graphical user interface. A graphical user interface is one where the user can interact with greater and it generally looks much more appealing to the eye. It is also generally easier to interact with and this thus makes it very popular with people and hence companies like Microsoft have adopted with their recent operating systems such as windows 7 and windows 8.
- 2Command line interfaceThis is quite literally an interface where you have a command line and a command line is where you can type commands into a computer and the computer will then execute those demands. An advantage of this is that it does not take up that much memory as the operating system only consists of a basic operating system and it means that you can make cheaper computers because the cpu will not need to be as powerful due to the fact that the operating system is less intensive. However, there are disadvantages and these are normally with the user. So, for example, the commands are fairly complicated which means that you will either have to have training on how to use the command prompt from an expert or you will have to invest a considerable amount of time in learning how to use it yourself. In addition to this, if you type a command wrong, then you will have to spend a potentially considerable amount of time working out what the problem is and this can be quite a frustrating experience.
- 3Menu-driven interfaceThis is an interface that is based around menus and is more user friendly than that of a command line interface due to the fact that it is easy to find what you want the computer to do and you don't have to type in some complex command. However, two disadvantages are that some options might not actually mean anything to the user and it can actually sometimes be quite difficult to find options if there are several menus and sub menus and even sub menus in the sub menus!
- 4Other interfacesThere are several other interfaces such as that of a point of sale (POS) interface which is simply like that of interface that you use when you do the speed checkout at a prestigious convenience store. You also have sound and speech interfaces which are like that of the command line interfaces, however instead of typing in commands, the user speaks commands. This would be particularly useful to someone who is blind because it would mean that it would not be required that can see what is on the monitor as the part of this interface is that the computer will fundamentally speak back what is on the monitor, so that the user can then say another instruction to the computer.
- 5OS (Operating System)A computer will not run without an operating system because there would be no information going to the CPU. When a computer boots, the operating system is loaded onto the memory from the hard drive where you can interact with it faster. To determine what the main part of the operating system, a small amount of information to determine this is stored on ROM (Read Only Memory). The operating system has many different purposes, but here are its main purposes: It loads and runs programs, it maximises the power of the CPU and the use of memory, it maintains the security of the system, it manages inputs and outputs and finally it deals with interruptions. An example of an operating system in the world at the moment would be Windows 8 and this is made by Microsoft.
- 6Different types of computer systemsYou can have single-program systems in which the operating system will only load one program at a time and then would load the next program. A batch processing system has something called a job queue in which each operation is in a queue to be completed. The advantages of a batch processing system is that no human intervention is needed when the batch starts and the processing can be done at off-peak times. A multi-programming system is where the computer holds more than one program in its memory and the computer gives each of these programs a small amount of time to run. This happens so fast that to the user it seems as if the computer is running more than one program. This means that more programs can be run faster. There is something called a multi-access system which is basically where you have workstations that are connected to a large mainframe computer. The workstations are where people will work and they generally consist of a keyboard, mouse and a monitor.
