1procedural language-a sequence of commands are executed in a specific order
-procedures complete tasks and functions provide information
- the instructions describe exactly what the computer musy do at each step
- e.g. pascal, basic
2declarative languages- the solution to a query is found by finding a match between the query and the facts and rules in the knowlege base
- used in artificial intelligence
- don't follow a specific order of operations
- use self-modifying code
-recursion- a procedure repeatedly calling itself until a simple base fact is identified
3object oriented languages- use reusable blocks of code called objects which define the data used within that block and how it can be changed
- attributes- data associated with an object
- operations- methods that can change data
- objects cant be altered from the outside
- inheritance- objects are created from an existing class and have the same characteristics
- objects interact by sending messages to each other
- encapsulation- data and operations are bound together within an object
