Trends in the periodic table
Fichas del conjunto (10)
- 1What is the covalent radius?Half the distance between two covalently bonded atoms.
- 2What is the trend of covalent radius across a period? It decreases as nuclear charge increases. This means electrons are pulled closer to the nucleus.
- 3What is the trend of covalent radius down a group? It increases as there are more electron shells. Each shell shields the outer electrons from the nucleus, so the outer electrons are less strongly attracted to the nucleus
- 4What is electronegativity?Electronegativity is a measure of attraction for electrons in a covalent bond.
- 5What happens to electronegativity down a group? It decreases due to the shielding effect. So electrons are less strongly attracted to the atom.
- 6What happens to the electronegativity across a period? It increases as the nuclear charge increases. This causes atoms to attract electrons more strongly.
- 7What is the ionisation energy? The energy required to remover one mole of electrons from one mole of atoms in the gaseous state.
- 8What happens to the ionisation energy going down a group? It decreases. As the electron is being removed from the outer electron shell which is further away from the nucleus as you go down the group.
- 9What happens to ionisation energy going across a period? It increases. As the nuclear charge increases meaning the outer electrons are more strongly attracted to the nucleus.
- 10Explain why the second ionisation energy of sodium is much higher than the first ionisation energy of sodium.Na has the electron arrangement: 2,8,1
The second ionisation energy would remove an electron from the second shell, which has a stronger nuclear pull than the third shell. In the second ionisation energy an electron is being removed from a full energy shell.
