  1. 1COMPUTER SYSTEMSComputer systems are everywhere because they are:
    - versatile
    - Cheap
    - and Small.
  2. 2WHAT IS A COMPUTER SYSTEMA computer system is a collection of parts that work together for a common purpose.
  3. 3WHAT DO USEFUL SYSTEMS NEED?Useful systems need to have an output and an input.
  4. 4WHAT IS AN INTERFACEInterconnections between systems
  5. 5WHAT IS A SYSTEM BOUNDARY?A system boundary separates what is in a system from what is not.
  6. 6SYSTEMSThere are two types of systems. These are:
    1) Natural
    2) Man-Made
  7. 7WHAT ARE COMPUTER SYSTEMS BASED ON?Computer systems are based on processing and producing information.
  8. 8COMPUTER SYSTEMSComputer systems can do many things depending on the instruction that you give it.
    They are also programmable.
  9. 9WHAT DOES COMPUTER SYSTEMS INVOLVE?In a computer system there are:
    1) Outputs
    2) Inputs
    3) Storage
    4) Processor
    5) and most importantly a software.
  10. 10WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT COMPUTER SYSTEMS?Computer systems can be 'dedicated' which means that they have a fixed purpose.
Other systems are 'general purpose'. They can be used for different purposes according to what work needs to be done.
  11. 11WHAT IS AN EMBEDDED COMPUTER SYSTEM?An embedded computer system is a computer system that forms part of an electronic device.
  12. 12GENERAL PURPOSE OPERATING SYSTEMSThere may be general-purpose operating systems like Linux - which is supporting dedicated software application. This reduces the effort needed to write the software for the device because most of its functionality is 'borrowed' from the operating system.
  13. 13WHAT IS THE KERNEL?The lowest level of an operating system that controls the hardware.
  14. 14RELIABLEComputer systems need to be reliable. If they are not it could cause lethal damage. It could result in the loss or theft of data.
    - To make systems more reliable you can adhere to certain standards.
  15. 15TESTINGTesting systems is a vital part of development and much time and effort is spent on it.
Testing everything is impossible and very expensive.
Testing is not an attempt to show that the system works. Testing is carried out purposely to reveal errors. Testers try to break a system to show where its weaknesses are.
  16. 16WHAT DOES MAINTENANCE MEAN?Changing systems once they have been installed.
    - Maintenance often requires more effort than the production of the system in the first place.
  17. 17WHAT IS BETA TESTING?Beta testing is when users are given an early version of a system.
  18. 18WHAT IS ALPHA TESTING?Alpha testing is carried out by the developers.
  19. 19WHAT IS A PROPRIETARY STANDARD?A proprietary standard is specifications for hardware and software that are controlled by one company.
  20. 20STANDARDS- Standards also help make sure that different computer systems can talk to each other.
    - Some standards are agreed across the computing industry.
    - Some standards just develop through common usage until they become the accepted way of making or doing things.
  21. 21THE ADVANTAGES OF STANDARDS- Look and feel familiar to users and this will speed up learning new systems.
    - Work in a predictable way, which in turn will improve reliability.
    - Be maintained by one company and although there will be different versions of the software, versions that contain minor updates are usually provided free of charge.
  22. 22WHAT IS HTML?HTML is hypertext mark up language. It is a text-based system for defining web pages.
  23. 23WHAT IS PDF?PDF is portable document format. It is a file standard that displays a document accurately on any computer platform.
  24. 24WHAT ARE OPEN STANDARDS?Open standards refer to standards that are publicly available, to an extent that software that is developed under them can be modified by users.
    - Open standards => software is often of very high quality because the community of developers act quickly to fix problems.
  25. 25WHAT DOES TCP/IP MEAN?TCP/IP stands for transmission control protocol/internet protocol. It is a set of standards that control how data is sent across networks including the internet.
