What do companies need to make sure that their online advertising is effective? It needs to capture attention It needs to maintain interest
What is pay per click advertising? A form of internet advertising involving websites or WebPages hosting ads for other companies. If the surfer clicks on an advert they are directed to the advertiser’s site or page. The website or web page provider will receive a payment, from the business, for every ad which is clicked on. This is normally a percentage of the income received for any customer clicks through in this way. Examples of this include: Google, YouTube, Yahoo! and Bing.
What are the positives of online communication? Any time and anywhere (which has internet connection) Relatively cheap Able to share knowledge and ask for knowledge easily More accessible Can be traced
What are the negative aspects of online communication? Lasting and can be revisited- what stays online lasts forever Risks of misunderstanding Takes longer than a verbal conversation Spread of viruses
What is VoIP? VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol it is used to talk in real time over video messaging or videos and in internet conversations when there is no additional charge of areas in real time e.g skype, facetime
What are the benefits of VoIP? Global communication at relatively low costs Can be used for online conferencing and meetings which reduces travel and venue costs, travel time and therefore they are not losing productivity. No risk of misunderstanding More natural Able to see them
What are the limitations of VoIP? Reliability-dependent on the quality and speed of your broadband service as VoIP can stop working or not work properly. Voice quality- Voices can be distorted and depending on the distance and speed of the broadband- long pauses Security-identity theft, spamming, phishing and viruses May need specific products- facetime
What is a popular programme for compressing files? Winzip- which stores the file as an index which uses algorithms to convert it to the original format
What are the advantages of zip files? Less storage required quicker to transfer files

What is cloud computing? Cloud computing means using computer services on another organisation’s computers, which are known as hosts. The services are provided by organisations known as hosting companies. E.g storing information on an organisations computers
Name some cloud storage hosting companies Microsoft, RackSpace,Google
What are the benefits of Cloud storage? Availability-accessed around the world at any time cost and convenience- only pay for the storage used, don't have to maintain or keep software and you can access all the tiles through the internet.
What are the negative aspects of cloud storage? Reliability and security of the network-could be hacked, no control over how the files are stored need to know terms and conditions Software-may not be the latest software Speed-may be slower than if the data is stored in the house.

What is RFID and how does it work? Radio Frequency identification- a chip which uses radio waves to transfer data to a tag on a person or object so it can be tracked. These tags contain information which is stored so that it can be transferred. For example in a cat flap the cat flap will contains a RFID chip. When the correct cat comes to the flap the flap will open as it has transferred the data which fits the data it is programmed to allow. If a different cat comes to the flap, it will not open as the data in the tag is not identical to what it is programmed to accept.
