Question Answer
Describe the structure of the atom. An atom consists of a nucleus composed of protons and neutrons (collectively known as nucleons). This is orbited by electrons.
Give the relative charges of each of the particles in the atom. Proton: +1 Electron: -1 Neutron: 0
Give the relative masses of each of the particles in the atom. Proton: 1 Electron: 1/1836 Neutron: 1 (The mass of a neutron is slightly greater than that of a proton).
What is the proton number of an atom? The proton number (Z) of an atom describes the number of protons in the nucleus (!).
What is the nucleon number of an atom? The nucleon number (A) of an atom describes the number of nucleons (protons + neutrons) in the nucleus (!).
What is specific charge and in what unit is it measured? The specific charge of a particle or ion is the ratio of its charge to mass (Q/m). The unit, therefore, is C/kg (coulombs per kg).
