Why is it important to avoid contamination of food during storage & preparation? Some bacteria form spores that survive cooking.
What is an epidemic? a disease that affects many individuals
What is a pandemic? A disease that spreads over a wide geographical area.
How do we prevent the spread of diseases in life stock? Good hygiene & sanitation, vaccines, & in extreme cases termination.
How can STIs be prevented? By using condoms.
What is meant by 'regulating the movement of plant material'? It means all plant material is inspected when it enters a country via a dock or an airport. If evidence of an affection is found, it will be safely disposed of.
What is meant by 'monoculture'? Keeping lots of the same plants planted close together.
What is the consequence of monoculture? Infection can be spread quickly.
What is meant by 'polyculture' Growing a mixture of different plants together.
What is the benefit of polyculture? Prevent infections spreading quickly.
What is meant by 'crop rotation'? When each field is planted w/ a different crop each year.
Why do people carry out crop rotation? Because if the same crop is replanted in the same place again & again, pathogens/spores in the soil can re-infect them.
What is meant by 'chemical control'? When chemical substances are used to reduce the spread of disease
What is meant by 'biological control'? Introducing a new species into an ecosystem to eat pests that damage plants.
