Flashcards
GCSE Physics - Pressure
Cards in this deck (14)
- 1What is pressure? It Is the force per unit area.
- 2What is the equation to calculate pressure?pressure = force / area
- 3What two things can be done to increase pressure?- increase the force
- reduce area the force acts upon - 4What two things can be done to decrease pressure?- decrease force
- increases area the force acts upon - 5When calculating pressure of gases, what are the measurements relative to?Normal air pressure
- 6What does a manometer do?Measure the pressure acting on a column of fluid
- 7Explain how a manometer works. It is a U-shaped tube in which the difference in pressure of the two sections of the tube causes the liquid to reach different heights in each of the two arms.
- 8How can pressure difference be calculated?height x density x g
- 9What happens to pressure when you move further away from a liquid's surface? It increases (this is the reason why dams are thicker at the base)
- 10What happens do the pressure of a denser liquid? It exerts a greater pressure (e.g: mercury is more dense compared to water)
- 11What can barometers be used for?Predicting weather by measuring atmospheric pressure.
- 12What do barometers usually contain?Mercury
- 13What happens in a barometer when the atmospheric pressure is high?It exerts a downwards force on the mercury, so it is pushed up.
- 14What happens inside a barometer when the atmospheric pressure is low?It cannot hold up the weight of the column, so the mercury moves down.
