Allegory A literary, dramatic or pictora device in which a character, object or event stands for a religious or moral principle
Allusion A short, informal reference to a famous person or event
Flashback A break in the storyline to introduce what has taken place earlier
Foreshadowing A hint that something is going to happen before it does
Hyperbole Obvious and intentional exaggeration
Imagery Descriptive language that evokes a sensory experiencec
Irony The expression of meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite
Dramatic Irony The reader/audience has information that a character does not
Verbal Irony A character says one thing but means another
Situational Irony When what happens is the opposite of what is expected to happen
Metaphor Compares 2 different things by speaking of one in terms of the other
Mood/Atmosphere The prevailing feeling in a story communicated through the author's direct comments, description of setting, attitudes actions and imagery
Nemesis A character's enemy
Oxymoron A figure of speech in which contradictory terms are combined
Pathos Anything that pulls at your heartstrings
Personification When animals, ideas, or objects are given human characteristics
Pun A play on words to emphasize a different meaning
Simile Compares 2 different things using "like" or "as"
Suspense Uncertainty or excitement regarding what will happen next
Symbol An object or concrete idea that stands for or represents something else
Tone Literary technique that encompasses the attitudes toward the subject and toward the audience implied in a literary work
Understatement Deliberately expressing an idea as less important than it actually is either for ironic emphasis or for politeness and tact
