Question Answer
what is photosynthesis? it is a process that makes glucose from carbon dioxide and water
word equation carbon dioxide + water = sugars(glucose) + oxygen requires: sunlight and chlorophyll
symbol equation (balanced) (6)CO2+(6)H20 = (6)C6H12O6+O2 requires: sunlight and chlorophyll
internal structure of a leaf
what factors increase or slow down the rate of photosynthesis 1. light intensity 2. temperature 3. carbon dioxide concentration
in excess: light intensity as light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases, however after a certain point the light intensity no longer effects the rate of photosynthesis because of the CO2 concentration or temperature becoming the limiting factor
in excess: CO2 concentration as the CO2 concentration increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases, however after a certain point the CO2 concentration no longer effects the rate of photosynthesis because of the light intensity or temperature becoming the limiting factor
in excess: temperature as temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis increases, however after a certain point the temperature increases too high the enzymes in the plant cab break down and denature
what is glucose used for in plants? -respiration -making cellulose -making amino acids
glucose use: respiration use the energy to convert the rest of the glucose into various other useful substances
glucose use: making cellulose glucose converted into cellulose for making strong cell wall, supports and strengths the cell
glucose use: making amino acids glucose is combined with nitrate ions to make amino acids. when amino acids are joined together in a particular sequences they make up a particular protein.
storgae of glucose: lipids plants can convert some of the glucose they produce into lipids (fats/oils), plants store lipids in seeds
storage of lipids: startch plants can convert glucose into startch ready for use when photosynthesis isn't happening as much, it is stored in the roots, stems, seeds and leaves. Insoluble so better for storing
calculationg the rate of photosynthesis =total length of bubble/time taken to produce (cm/min)
inverse square law: light intensity (directly proportional) 1/d^2 example: if you have half the distance the light intensity will be four times greater
greenhouses they can artifically create the perfect environment to maximise the rate of photosynthesis. trap sun's heat and make sure the temp isnt limited. supply artificial light. they use paraffin heaters and as it burns it makes CO2. they keep plants healthy and away from diseases and pests. add fertilisers
