What happened on the 11th November 1918? Friedrich Ebert became the new chancellor of Germany and signs the armistice
What was article 48? A part of the new Weimar constitution that meant the president could make laws without the support of the reichstag
What was signed on the 28th June 1919? The Treaty of Versailles
What was the Article 231? The war guilt clause
What was the “stab in the back” theory? The idea that Ebert and the Weimar Government were the cause of the humiliation and shame that the Treaty of Versailles brought to Germany
How much was Germany expected to pay in reparations? £6.6 billion
What did Ebert do to prevent socialist revolutions taking place? He made a deal with the new army leader, Groener, that the army would support the government against revolution. The Weimar Government was now dependent on the army.
What and when was the Spartacus Uprising? 6th January 1919, a communist attempt to overthrow Ebert and create a communist state. Was crushed by the freikorps.
What and when was the Kapp Putsch? 13th-17th March 1920, a right wing attempt to capture and control Berlin. Was successful in capturing Berlin but had little support from the public and so collapsed.
When did the French and Belgium troops first occupy the Ruhr? January 1923
What were some results of the occupation of the Ruhr? •United Germany in their hatred of France and Belgium •Led to a strike, backed by the government who printed more money which caused hyperinflation
When did Gustav Stresemann become chancellor and what did he introduce? The summer of 1923, a new currency called the Rentenmark which brought about economic recovery
What was the Dawes plan? Agreed in August 1924, altered the reparations payments so they were in more manageable payments of 1-2.5 billion marks per year
What was the Young Plan? A new plan for payments making the length of time Germany would be paying 59 years with payments at an average of 2.05 billion marks per year. Curtsied by right-wing politicians
Who was Paul Von Hindenburg? One of Germany’s war leaders. Elected president 1925.
What was the problem with US loans? Germany had entered a vicious circle of payments where, if the loans were called in by the US, Germany’s economy would collapse
What was the Locarno Pact? A Pact signed by Germany, Britain, France, Belgium and Italy agreeing to keep existing boarders and marking Germany’s return to the international scene
When was Germany accepted into the League of Nations? September 1926
What was the Kellogg-Briand Pact? A Pact signed in 1928, where 64 nations agreed armies would only be for self-defence
When did allied troops withdraw from the Rhine? 1927, five years before scheduled
How many new homes were built between 1924 and 1931? More than 2 million (200,000 were also renovated)
