"For brave Macbeth" A1 S2 Captain The first time we meet Macbeth he is described as brave. He appears to be the hero of the story
"Till he unseam'd him from the nave to the chaps" A1 S2 Captain Shows Macbeth has great skill when fighting. Appears to be a hero
"All hail Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter" A1 S3 Third Witch The prophecy given to Macbeth, which gives him a goal for the future. His ambition goes on to be his downfall
"Stars, hide your fires, Let not light see my black and deep desires" A1 S5 Macbeth This line is said 'aside' which shows Macbeth is a sneaky sly character. He wants to keep his evil plans secret. He speaks this soliloquy in iambic pentameter. This shows he is in control of what he is saying.
"Yet I do fear thy nature, It is too full of the milk of human kindness" A1 S5 Lady Macbeth Lady Macbeth thinks he is too good to kill Duncan
"If we should fail" A1 S7 Macbeth Shows he is unsure and weak like lady Macbeth predicted. He is scared of failing
"Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand?" A2 S1 Macbeth Interrogative sentence suggests Macbeth is unsure of himself. He is beginning to go mad, seeing things. Shows his mental and inner conflict.
"I fear Thou played'st most foully for it" A3 S1 Banquo He suspects that Macbeth has done something bad in order to become King. He is suspicious
"Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown" A3 S1 Macbeth Macbeth feels unsure about the future and is scared.
"We have scorched the snake, not killed it" A3 S2 Macbeth His position isn't secure as he hasn't stopped all of the witches prophecies. Shows that he is hungry for power. Animal imagery of a snake suggests sneakiness and a sly character.
"The mind I sway by and the heart I bear, Shall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear" A5 S3 Macbeth He will be strong as he goes into battle. Repetition of his character at the beginning of the play but now the ideas are twisted.
"Bear-like I must fight the course." A5 S7 Macbeth He will be brave. Simile suggested he will strong. More animal imagery.
"But get thee back, my soul is too much charged with blood of thine already." A5 S8 Macbeth Macbeth already feels guilty that he killed Lady Macduff. He feels tortured by his crimes.
