Flashcards
King Lear Act 1 Revision
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1Who speaks first in the play?Kent saying "I thought the King had more effected the Duke of Albany than Cornwall"
- 2Significance of 'unburdened crawl towards death'? (said by KL)This implies burden from being a King, he wants to pass this burden onto his children rather than keep it himself. And, he himself wants to resort back to childhood ('crawl'). In passing on his duties to the younger gen. he is also passing on his own burden.
- 3Significance of 'that future strife may be prevented now'? (said by KL)The idea of this is to prevent conflict when Lear is dead, however, this is ironic because this causes the conflict to take place.
- 4What abstract nouns does Goneril say in her speech? Relevance of this?'Dearer than eyesight, space, liberty' - makes her love seem fake due to the exaggerated tones of her speech.
- 5What is the significance of Cordelia speaking aside in this scene?Shows signs that she does love her father, but doesn't feel she can express how much she does through speech. 'my love's more ponderous than my tongue'
- 6How does Regan prove her speech to be exaggerated and false? The line ''I profess myself an enemy to all other joys" suggests that Regan loves her father only and nobody else. However, Regan is married to Cornwall, and so she should have some love for him too. Exaggerated.
- 7Who is Goneril's husband?Albany
- 8Who is Regan's husband?Cornwall
- 9How does Lear present the idea that he favors Cordelia over his other two children?'Our joy' - favourite child.
- 10It may be argued that G+R are victimized in this scene, how?KL makes it obvious that he favours Cordelia and in turn is going to give her the larger piece of land regardless of her answer Lear's wishes - victims are G+R because situation is unfair of them when they've both already done what they've been told. 'what can you say to draw a third more opulent than your sisters?' shows this. Mistreated by KL
- 11KL response to Cordelia - one of the most important/key quotes in play?'Nothing will come of nothing'
- 12Another way Lear shows favouritism of Cordelia? He gives her a second chance 'mend your speech a little'
