Khrushchev (K) sent troops and tank to Budapest after demonstartions had began in 10/56 to try to rstore peace 25th October tanks opened fire killing 12 and injuring more than a hundred Gero was forced to resign and Kadar took over as temporary PM Nagy released 30 prisoners including Cardinal Mindszenty Next day his propsed reforms published, most contreversial being the withdrawl from the Warsaw Pact
Nagy asked UN to consider Hungary's situation Political parties under Rakosi re-established K didnt want to be seen as weak by other members of Warsaw Pact Mao Zedong, china's leader, urged him to stand firm against any deviations from Communism
4/11/56 k sent 200,00 troops and 6000 tanks to Hungary Ceasefire agreed on the 10th but there was still spordic fighting until middle of 57 World's attention drawn away by events in the East Nagy had been hiding in Yugoslavian embassy. Kadar offered him safe passage but broke his word and sent him to Romania were he was shot
7000 Soviet troops dead 20,000 rebels dead K able to keep control as new Soviet backed leader was installed, Kadar Hungarians were able to flee during uprising USSR maintained empire and sent warnings to other Soviet states that there'd be no toleration for deviation Poland&Hungary made slow reforms after 56 but were still under firm Soviet control West saw K's recent message of peace as a sham
