Question Answer
What is infrared radiation? thermal radiation emitted by the Sun
all objects emit... ... and absorb infrared radiation.
How does infrared radiation depend on the temperature of an object? the hotter an object, the more infrared radiation it emits in a given time
What is blackbody radiation? a perfect black body is an object that absorbs all the radiation that hits it
Does an object's temp increase or decrease as it absorbs radiation faster than it absorbs it? the object's temperature will increase
Why do rescue teams use light-coloured, shiny blankets to keep survivors warm? it emits a lot less radiation than a dark, matt surface, keeping the patient more warm
What does the Earth's temperature depend on? • the absorption of infrared radiation emitted from the Sun • the emission of radiation from the Earth's surface
How does the build-up of gases in the atmosphere lead to global warming? these gases absorb the radiation and then emit it back to the surface, which makes Earth a lot warmer than it would be it these gases were not in the atmosphere
