Question Answer
Location: Hills of Nemea The Lion: Invulnerable skin, Heracles first stopped at Molorchus's house, and they sacrificed an offering to Zeus as thanks when Heracles returned after killing the lion. Heracles strangled the lion and took its skin. This proved to Eurystheus how strong he was; scaring him into using a herald to see Heracles in person instead of him.
Located in lake Lerna. With his nephew Iolaus, they set fire to the heads, so they couldn't grow back, and then chopped them off. ONe head was immortal, so they buried it under a rock. The task didn't count, because his nephew helped him.
The Golden Hind Had golden horns and bronze hoofs. It was Artemis's sacred deer and he was not allowed to harm it. Tired when he finally tracked it down, he shot it with an arrow! Artemis was furious - but Heracles sweet-talked her into forgiving him.
Before task: He had dinner with a centaur friend, Pholus, but many other centaurs arrived and tried to attack him when he opened some sweet smelling wine. Heracles fought them off, but Pholus killed himself accidentally with an arrow through the foot! Heracles buried him. Heracles killed the boar by riding it for hours, until it tired, then impaling it with a spear.
The Augean stables Heracles had to clean the stables of king Augeas in one day, and if he did, he'd win a tenth of Augeas's cattle. Smartly, Heracles changed the course of the river towards the stables to clean them. But Augeas refused to pay his reward, Heracles made his son admit, to a court, that the deal had been made. Heracles wasn't given his reward - but instead was banished (along with Augeas's son)! This task didn't count, because of Heracles asking for a reward.
The Stymphalian Birds The birds had bronze beaks, metallic claws and poisonous dung. They also ate people. Heracles coulnd't cross a marsh to reach them, so Athena gave him a rattle called a Kratala which scared the birds away. Heracles shot several down.
The Cretan bull King Minos was graceful to be rid of the bull, and Heracles got rid of it by wrestling it with his bare hands. He wanted to sacrifice it to Hera, but she refused, thinking it would further glorify Heracles. So he set it free instead. (Fun fact - This was the same bull Pasiphae, queen of Crete, fell in love with, and gave birth to the Minotaur!)
4 horses owned by the King of Thrace, Diomedes. Diomedes planned to feed Heracles and his friends to the horses, but they won a fight against his guards and fed the king to them. One friend, who was entrusted with looking after the horses, was sadly eaten himself.
Hipplyta, the amazon queen, welcomed Heracles and his friends. But Hera made them think he was here to kill them (but he wasn't!) An unnecessary fight ensued, leaving Hippolyta dead, and Heracles took her belt. The belt was a birthday present to Eurystheus's daughter, Admete.
Heracles was told to steal the cattle of Geryon, but it was guarded by the two-headed brother of Cerberus, Orthus. The journey to Erythia took a long time, and Heracles faced many monsters. He defeated Orthus, and then Geryon (the three headed demon) when he appeared too. The REAL challenge of the task came when Heracles struggled to bring the cattle home. Many foes tried to steal it for themselves, and Heracles had to make sure he always had all of them.
The golden apples of Hesperidies The golden apples were a wedding present to Zeus and Hera. They were guarded by the dragon Ladon in a garden with 100 apples. It took a long time, and many Gods (like the sea God Nereus) giving him directions, for him to find the garden. Because he was told only the titan Atlas, who was holding up the world, could retrieve the apples, Heracles had to hold the world up until he returned. Atlas wanted Heracles to hold up the world for ever while he could run away, but clever Heracles asked him to hold the world to let him briefly readjust his cape, and Heracles ran away! The apples were later returned by Athena
Cerberus was the 3-headed guardian dog of the underworld (and brother of Orthus). Heracles ventured into the underworld (fighting many foes along the way) to meet Hades. Hades allowed Heracles to take Cerberus to Eurystheus if he could overpower the beast with his bare hands. Heracles won; took the dog to Eurystheus and then returned him to the underworld.
