Pharmacy Technician An individual working under a licensed pharmacist who assists in the pharmacy with those duties which do not require the professional judgement of the pharmacist.
Retail/Community Pharmacy Location may be privately or corporately owned. May be a stand alone, chain, or located in grocery and big box stores.
Hospital Pharmacy Location in which technician work includes med delivery, automated med dispensers, crash cart maintenance, and parenteral meds.
Long-Term Care Pharmacy Location in which technician deals primarily with medical professionals. Work includes med pack and med card prep. Sometimes referred to as being "closed door".
Mail-Order Pharmacy Location in which technician preps and packages orders, usually dispenses 90 day supplies, and communicates primarily through telephone and electronic methods.
Nuclear Pharmacy Location in which technician must be extensively trained and handles the prep of radioactive materials.
Additional Technician Job Opportunities Corporate Offices, Insurance Companies, and Drug Manufacturing
Pharmacy Intern Individual who can do all the same tasks as a technician. Additional advanced tasks may be determined. by the Board of Pharmacy and Pharmacist in Charge.
Tech-Check-Tech Special circumstance in which a technician checks the work of another technician. This is only permitted in some states.
Med Order Term used primarily in inpatient care settings in place of "prescription".
Parenteral Meds Technical term for injectable/IV medications
Med Pack Single use doses, primarily filled in hospitals.
Floor Stock Commonly used meds stored in the patient care units of a hospital.
Med Cards Single patient, multi-dose organizers usually supplied with 14-31 days supply of medicine. Typically used in long-term care.
Radiopharmaceuticals Medicine containing radioactive materials. Commonly used for diagnosis, chemo, and thyroid and arthritis treatments.
Key Rule Regarding Technician Duties If ANY action or step requires the professional judgement of the pharmacist, then the technician is NOT permitted to do it.
Examples of Duties That Technicians May Not Perform -Counseling Patients -Changing Rxs or Med Orders -Administer Immunizations -Perform Final Verifications -Med Use Reviews -Taking New Rx or Refill With Changes over the phone
Emergency Fill Cart The long-term care version of a hospital crash cart - usually contains meds such as glucagon and albuterol.
Adhering to Patient Health and Safety Providing ONLY the services you are permitted to.
Maintaining Integrity Being truthful of all experiences, obeying laws, and avoiding illegal activities.
Maintaining Quality Ensuring that meds and devices are in good status and meet the standards of the law.
Respecting Patients Maintain the privacy and dignity of the patient. Never stereotype or act out of bias.
Ensuring Patient Confidentiality Obeying all HIPPA laws, ensuring the safety and protection of PHI and ePHI, and releasing only the "minimum necessary" info for a situation.
Staying Up-to-Date Working to consistently improve and expand ones knowledge of drugs, medications, technology, procedures, laws, etc.
Managing Personal Stress in the Pharmacy Balancing duties, maintaining job requirements, and keeping good coworker relations.
Maintaining Tech Knowledge Keeping up with latest advancements, eagerly learning new programs and devices, asking for assistance; technology is KEY to the workflow and record keeping process in the pharmacy.
Upholding Professionalism Engaging in above-standard work ethics, representing the best of the pharmacy, and separating ones personal life from the work life of the pharmacy.
Being Adaptable Willingly and pleasantly adjusting to change and maintaining flexibility in the work environment.
Communicating Keeping open body language, considering choice of wording and tone, making eye contact, writing legibly, and speaking clearly.
Registration A list of pharmacy staff containing names and other pertinent info. Does not always address education and training.
Certification A process by which an organization recognizes an individual who meets predetermined, specified qualifications.
CPhT Title of a certified pharmacy technician
Licensure Permission granted to an individual to practice their occupation after it's been determined that the individual has the minimum level of competency to practice safely.
