Question Answer
Recall one property common among all waves. All waves transfer energy without transferring matter
Define a transverse wave. In a transverse wave, vibration is at 90° to the direction in which the energy is transferred
Define a longitudinal wave. In a longitudinal wave, vibration is parallel to the direction in which energy is transferred
What is amplitude? Amplitude is the maximum displacement from the point of equilibrium.
What is wavelength? Wavelength is the distance between two points at the same stage in a waves cycle.
What is frequency? Frequency is the number of oscillations per unit time.
What is time period in terms of waves? Time period is the time taken for a wave to complete one cycle.
what is the equation for time period? Time Period = 1/frequency
What is the equation for wave speed? Wave speed = frequency * wavelength
What is the audible range? The audible range is the range of frequencies at which humans can hear sound, usually 20Hz-20kHz.
What is Ultrasound? Ultrasound is sound at frequencies above 20kHz.
In sound, how is energy transferred? In sound, the particles vibrate back and forth and collide with each other, transferring energy. The particles vibrate in the same direction as the energy travels, thus sound is longitudinal.
What are the parts to this diagram? a) Compression b) Rarefaction
How do you find the speed of sound in air? 1) 2 people are places a distance (d) apart 2) one person fires a starters pistol 3) The other measures the time difference (t) 4) speed is calculated by s=d/t
How do you measure the speed of water waves? 1) Measure the time (t) for a set number (N) of waves to pass a point 2) Then find the frequency (f) = N/t 3) Measure the distance between 2 peaks, this is the wavelength (λ) 4) the spped is given by v = fλ
what is the calculation for uncertainty? % uncertainty = (error/measurement) * 100
Describe these uses/advantages of uses of Ultrasound: (i) Communication between animals Advantages are that animals can communicate without being heard by other animals and navigation via SoN Animals which use ultrasound include Dolphins, bats and mice.
