Question Answer
What is the definition of the cell? A cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism.
What is a Prokaryotic Cell? Is a type of cell that only covers bacteria and unicellular organisms.
What is an Eukaryotic Cell? Is a cell that is multicellular and unicellular and covers mostly animals.
What is an Organelle? Is any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell.
What is a Cell Membrane? Is the semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
What is the Cytoplasm? Is a goo substance that every part of the cell floats in.
What is the Nucleus? Is the center and main control of the cell.
What is a Ribosome? Are the protein builders or protein synthesizers of the cell.
What is the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum? Is a system of membrane that possesses ribosomes.
What is the Golgi Apparatus? An organelle in a cell that receives proteins and other new formed materials from the E.R., packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell.
What is a Mitochondria? Rod-shaped organelle that converts energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its function.
What is a Lysosome? A cell organism which contains chemicals that breaks down large food particles into smaller ones and that can be used by the rest of the cell.
What is a Vacuole? A sac-like organelle that store water, food and waste.
What is the Chloroplast? A plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
What is a Cell Wall? A rigid layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organsims.
What is Chemical Digestion? Breaking down of foods into their building blocks.
What is Mechanical Digestion? Where does it take place? tearing or grinding food into smaller pieces. Usually takes place in mouth and stomach.
What do the Salivary Glands do? They make saliva to break down food.
What are Enzymes? A type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing.
What is the Esophagus? A muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
What is the Epiglottis? A flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe and prevents food from entering the lungs.
What is the stomach? An organ in the form of a muscular pouch where food is broken down, located in the abdomen.
what is the liver? It processes the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. Makes bile and is the largest.
What is the Gall Bladder? It stores the bile.
what is the Pancreas? It stores insulin, digestive enzymes are produced, aid in breathing down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
What is Absorption? The process by which nutrient molecules pass through the wall of the digestive system into the blood.
what is the small intestine? It absorbs the nutrients and is below the stomach.
What is the Large intestine? it absorbs water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body.
What are the 3 main functions of the Digestive System? -breaks down food into molecules the body can use -molecules are absorbed in the blood and carried throughout the body -wastes are eliminated from the body
What is digestion? The process by which your body breaks down into small nutrient molecules that can be absorbed by cells.
What are the 2 types of digestion? Chemical and Mechanical (physical)
What is Saliva? The fluid released from glands in the mouth that plays an important role in both mechanical and chemical digestion.
What is peristalsis? Waves of smooth muscle contractions that move food through the esophagus toward the stomach.
