Chapter 11 Editing and Coding
Cards in this deck (4)
- 1EditingIt is the process of checking and adjusting data for omission, legibility, and consistency to ready them for coding and storage
- 2CodingIt is the process of assigning numerical scores or other symbols to previously edited raw data
Codes are rules for interpreting, classifying and recording data
Researchers organize coded data into fields, records and files:
A field is a collection of characters that represent a single type of data. i.e. a cell in spreadsheet
A record is a collection of related fields. i.e. a row in spreadsheet
A file is a collection of related records. i.e. spreadsheet with coding explanations - 3Pre-coding Fixed-alternative QuestionsPre-coding can be used if the researcher knows the answer categories prior to data collection
Single-response coding: Each answer option for a question is pre-coded 1, 2, 3, and so on, which will be used for data entry
Multiple-response coding: coding should be employed as if multiple questions were being asked - 4Coding Open-endedThe purpose of coding open-ended questions is to reduce the large number of responses by coding similar answers into categories, to transfer meanings from written responses to numeric codes
The reason of using open-ended questions is because researcher has no clear hypotheses or a set of answers regarding the questions
