Flashcards
Beams w/Gravity Load
Cards in this deck (14)
- 1Where would you find continuous beams being used?Bridges and building floor systems
- 2How many IP can you have in an unloaded beam span? One
- 3If a beam with several spans is asymmetrically loaded how would IP locations be decided and why? Process of Analysis? As there would be >2 IP in the loaded span, use super position by unloading on span, analysing the 2 IP, then unload/reload and do the other 2 IP. Add diagrams together and get our 2 IP at either side of Joint.
- 4How many IP can you have in an loaded beam span?Maximum of 2
- 5Define inflection point? How used?Point on a curve where direction of curve changes. For Approx Analysis, IP has M=0 so can be assumed a pin/hinge.
- 6How can IP on a beam be found? Why?Using qualitative BMD (point loads) or Elastic Curve, because can be reasonably accurate drawing for beams.
- 7Why insert IP on a beam?To achieve determinacy by equalling unknowns
- 8How get degree of indeterminacy?Reaction - (EQ's + Hinges) = Degree of Indeterminacy or Unknowns
- 9If span is Point loaded, what shape is the BMDLinear
- 10What are IP attracted toward?Reduced Stiffness
- 115 main steps for Approx Analysis of a beamDeterminacy
Draw Shapes
Locate IP
Solve Statics
Diagrams - 12How would unequal spans affect IP? Which IP would you use?Longer span has bigger FEM, rotating the joint toward it and pushing its IP toward it.
Use the long span for more accuracy. - 13Degree of Indeterminacy? Describe Defected Shape and BMD.? Where would IP be?
- 14How would you analyse this beam and why?Need to use Superposition as there can be only 2 IP in the whole loaded beam. This beam would have 2 in each, So by taking separate and combining later can satisfy and have an IP either side of the centre support.
