Question Answer
Erosion movement of weathered material from one place to another
Deposition process that puts weathered material in a new location
What are the 4 agents of erosion? 1) Gravity 2) Wind 3) Water 4) Glaciers
Gravity force that pulls objects towards the center of the earth
Mass Movement movement of weathered material by gravity
What are the types of Mass Movement? Creep Rock slide Mud flow Slump
Rock Slide movement of rocks down a hill
Creep slow movement of sediments down a hill
Slump sudden movement downhill or large chunks of earth
Mudflow movement of wet sediments that flow downhill over the ground
Glacier large mass of ice
What are the effects of Glaciers? U-shaped valleys and cirques (bowl shaped)
What are the Glacial Deposits? Out wash and Till
Out Wash deposits of sand and gravel left by a glacial stream
Till sediments from glacier ice
How is Wind an agent of erosion? Wind picks up and carry sediments as it moves
What does wind use to erode the earth? Abrasion and Deflation
Abrasion when rock particles rub against one another & other rocks due to streams, wind, waves, gravity, and glaciers.
Deflation occurs when wind blows across loose sediments and carries them away, often leaving behind particles too heavy to move
Loess wind deposits silt
Sand Dunes wind deposits sand
How do Sand Dunes travel? The grains are blown up to the windward side of the dune until they reach the top. Then, they drop down into the shelter of the lee (the side away from the wind)
How is Water an agent of erosion? Water picks up weathered material and carries it
Runoff water that flows over the earth’s surface
Sheet Flow water that flows without channels or path over the Earth
Rills small channels cut in sediments by moving water
Gullies formed when rills deepen
Streams made when gullies connect
Deltas formed where streams meet oceans or lakes
How does the shape of the valley eroded by a glacier differ from the shape of a valley eroded from running water? The shape of a valley eroded by a glacier is usually in a U-shape or a cirque form while the shape of a valley eroded from running water makes V- shaped valleys
