Mrs Birling- “girls of that class” | Judgemental, shows how big headed she is. Her social standing is much higher than other and wants to make the inspector and us aware of that. Emphasis on that shows just how low she thinks of Eva (the lower class) |

Sheila Birling- “but these girls aren’t cheap labour— there people” | Shows the generational divide between Sheila and Mr Birling She critiques her father and challenges his views on the lower class Socialist views and encourages change within the social class divide |
Mrs Birling- “you’re behaving like a hysterical child’ | She’s speaking down to Sheila almost belittling her. Trying to make Sheila seem childish and immature. Taking the attention from herself. |
Mr birling- “you’ve a lot to learn yet” | Believes he knows best- distancing himself from his family, which shows he has or believes he has more power than everyone else, the’s the man of the house which is a typical patriachical family. Undermines their intelligence and makes him bigger by making them feel smaller. |
Mrs Birling- ‘I accept no blame for it at all” | Every bodies to blame except herself, ignorant to the part she played in Eva’s death. Over-confident, superior Tries to control the situation, refuses to believe she’s in the wrong |
Eric Birling- “you don’t understand anything — you never did’ | Highlights how his parents always ignored him. Separates himself from his family similar to Mr B but for different reasons. Puts Mrs Birling in the spotlight Generational divide Mrs Birling never cared and never gave her a chance. |
