Question Answer
What are multicellular organisms? Organisms that are made up of many cells
Give some examples of multicellular organisms Humans, birds fish and insects
What is the meaning of specialised cells? Cells that have a special job to do and have a structure that makes them better able.
How many cells do the human body contain? It contains about 50 trillion cells
How many types of cells are in the human body? There are more that 200 types of cells
Name the three types of muscles - voluntary muscles (skeletal) - involuntary muscles (smooth) -cardiac muscles
Explain skeletal muscles They are attached to the bones of your skeleton. They are for support and movement. Examples: biceps & triceps.
Explain involuntary muscles They work without thinking about it. Like breathing and the food moving through the gut.
Why do voluntary and involuntary muscles contain a large number of mitochondria? These muscles require a lot of energy to keep working. Mitochondria= energy
Explain cardiac muscles They are the muscles that make up the heart. Have a stripped appearance. Do not get tired.
What are nerve cells? They are cells that carry information in the body.
Meaning of axon? Long fibres that extend from nerve cells and carry messages over long distances
What is the longest axon of a human nerve cell? It is the one that reaches from the base of the spine to the toes. Can be more that a metre!
What are red blood cells? Cells that carry oxygen from the lungs around the body. Also removed waste carbon dioxide
What are white blood cell? They are part of the immune system and help the body to fight infections.
What are two types of fat cells? Brown cells and white cells
What is the job of the brown fat cells? To produce heat for the body, like when you are shivering.
What is the job for white fat cells? To store energy. They form an insulating layer under the skin to keep a constant temperature.
Do plants have more types of cells or do animals? Plants do not have as many types of cells than animals.
Explain specialised plant cells Each type of cell has to carry out a different function within the plant.
