- 1CHAPTER 1Nameless narrator reflects on "the winter of 1975" we get references to the past and how it has "made him what he is today" his past of "unatoned sins". References to Hassan when he sees a kite in san francisco
- 2CHAPTER 2Amir introduces Hassan as his "loyal Hazara servent" Baba and Ali are introduced and it is revealed that Amirs mother died during childbirth. We also discover that Hassans first name was: Amir and Amir's was: Baba.
- 3Chapter 3Baba tells Amir that "stealing is a sin" and Amir over hears Baba and Rahim Khan's conversation how "he would of never believed he was his son"
- 4Chapter 4Babas past is explored, and Amir writes his first story - Rahim khan praises him. Hassan makes Amir angry.
- 5Chapter 5Assef is relentlessly cruel to Hassan. Hassan protects him and Amir with his slingshot "one eyed Assef". Assef backs away but he threatens revenge. It is Hassans birthday and Baba pays for his clef lip to be fixed.
- 6Chapter 6The idea of kite fighting is introduced. Amir loves kites as it is the way to Babas acceptance. Hassan is described as the "greatest kite runner".
- 7Chapter 7Amir and Hassan win the kite tournament, Amir decides to give the blue kite to Baba as a trophy. Hassan goes to run his kite but then Amir finds him getting cornered by Assef, Wali and Kamal. Hassan is raped and Amir watches. He returns home to give Baba the kite.
- 8Chapter 8Amir ignores Hassan. Amir asks Baba if he ever considered getting new servents. Pomegranate fight with Hassan which ends with Hassan smashing the pomegranate on his own forehead.
- 9Chapter 9Amir frames Hassan as a thief, Hassan lies and admits to it. At this stage we get the hint that Ali and Hassan know what Amir did and now it "would be impossible" for them to stay. Baba cries for the first time.
- 10Chapter 10Baba and Amir flee Kabul and head ot Pakistan in secret. Baba stops a young mother from being raped by a Russian solider. They meet Kamal and his father in the basement. Revealed that Kamal was raped. Kamal dies from the fumes and his father commits suicide.
- 11Chapter 11Baba and Amir move to America. Amir graduates high school and decides to go to college and study English. Despite Babas disapproval. Amir and Babas relationship has improved. At the end of the chapter Amir meets Soraya.
- 12Chapter 12Amir begins to court Soraya. Baba is diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour - he refuses treatment and tells Amir to keep it a secret (doesn't want pity) Amir asks Baba to arrange for him to marry Soraya. Soraya tells Amir of her past.
- 13Chapter 13Amir and Soraya marry and she moves in to take care of Baba. Baba dies. Babas funeral is hard for Amir. Amirs first book is published and the doctors tell the couple they cannot have children.
- 14Chapter 14Rahim Khan calls Amir asking him to come to Pakistan "there is a way to be good again". Amir decides to visit Rahim Khan.
- 15Chapter 15Amir reaches Pakistan to discover that Rahim Khan is gravely ill. He reveals the political history of Afghanistan.
- 16Chapter 16Rahim Khans narrative voice. We discover that Hassan was married and his wife was expecting their first child. Ali had been killed in a landmine. Hassan cried when he heared that Baba had pastaway. Hassans mother returns and becomes a great grandmother to Sohrab who is a great kite runner.
- 17Chapter 17Hassans letter, and reveals that Hassan is dead. Tells Amir he could rescue Sohrab. Reveals that Ali was sterile therefore Hassan is his brother.
- 18Chapter 18Amir feels betrayed. The irony for Baba "stealing is a sin". Despite that Amir decides to go to Kabul and find Sohrab.
- 19Chapter 19Farid helps Amir to enter Afghanistan. The poverty is overwhelming. Amir places a bundle of money under the mastress.
- 20Chapter 20They enter Kabul, and Amir is shocked by the decay. They locate the orphanage to find out that Sohrab had been sold to the Taliban. Told to go to Ghazi Stadium to know where Sohrab is.
- 21Chapter 21Amir visits his childhood home, Amir and Farid go to a football stadium where a man and women are stoned to death. A meeting is them arranged with them.
- 22Chapter 22Amir goes alone, and Sohrab is brought out wearing a dress and makeup. Amir realises that the man ASSEF. Assef and Amir fight. Sohrab steps in using a slingshot to remove remove Assefs left eye. They escape and reach Farids car before Amir falls unconscious.
- 23Chapter 23Amir wakes up in hospital. Rahim Khan dies leaving Amir his money and a letter telling him to forgive himself. Shorab and Amir leave the hospital to go to Islambad.
- 24Chapter 24Sohrab goes missing, and Amir finds him outside a Mosque. Sohrab opens up to Amir and tells him he never wants to go back to an orphanage. Amir discovers that moving to America and adopting him is going to be difficult. He wil have to stay in an orphanage for a while. Sohrab attempts suicide.
- 25Chapter 25Sohrab survives but tells Amir that he wished he hadn't. He doesn't speak even when they move to America. Amir buys Sohrab a kite. The two of them fly it together, winning the battle. Amir runs the kite for Sohrab, just as Hassan once did. Sohrab smiles symbolic of hope.
