- 1This speech takes place before the murdering of Duncan and we see Macbeth demonstrating the inner uncertainty, in which he contemplates the murder of Duncan. He knows that what he is doing is morally wrong and with that there might be consequences. Also his loyalty towards the king makes it harder to stick with the plan of killing.Where he therefore lists all the noble qualities that Duncan has and which in case we see that he is hardly a tyrant and done nothing but good towards him. Because of this feeling he wants to get over and done with this murder even he feels uneasy about this plan.
- 2From the beginning of the play we see Macbeth as a valiant warrior who is regarded as a hero, but then when he heard the prophecies from the witches his ambition slowly started to overtake him. We do see this when he heard the news of Malcolm being king but then when Lady Macbeth influences him, you can see him slowly having this determination to become a king .Besides he didn’t go straight into the plan of murdering but he tried to convince himself the possibilities of the murder. He does this by listing the noble qualities of Duncan and his loyalty that he feels towards him. He didn't show it until this speech where he tried to list all the possibilities that could go wrong but also says that he couldn't escape from this strong ambition.
- 3Furthermore, he states that with this ambition he would enter a dark and sinful world. From this we understand that Macbeth is easily persuaded by prophecies and with the encouragement from Lady Macbeth he can be easily influenced. One of the main theme in this play is ambition and this also makes it important to the play. This monologue of Macbeth shows us that even he knows how good Duncan has been towards him, yet he still wants to pursue his ambition.
- 4His ambition slowly started to spur and he knows that this ambition of his will be dangerous. Hence, he is aware of this and we know this by his speech where he quotes this as ‘vaulting ambition’.Shakespeare language might seem hard to read it in the first go but once you analysed the words, it might come of as interesting and complex. It is clear that it is in a poetic form where they described certain things a bit than the modern english.
- 5With this quote “ If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well It were done quickly.” The actual definition of this quote is “If this business would really be finished when I did the deed, then it would be best to get it over with quickly.”There is no actual words that describes work but instead the quote describes as something being done.
Another technique that shakespeare uses is the iambic pentameter. It is a kind of rhythmic pattern that consists of five iambs per line, almost like five heartbeats. - 6Shakespeare did a great work to make us think that ambition either turn out be good or evil. Especially through this speech he is trying to say that when there is ambition you will do anything to achieve it.Here we see Macbeth trying to list all the noble qualities that Duncan has but with his strong ambition, he will do anything to fulfill what he sees as his destiny.
