  1. 1Colostomy ManagementPouches come in a variety of styles and sizes that do not show under clothing. They are made of disposable materials and designed to be worn once and then discarded.
  2. 2—These pouches do the same function of collecting stool that may expel expectantly or unexpectedly. Some are open at the bottom for easy emptying. Others are closed and are removed when filled. Others allow the adhesive face plate or flange to remain on the body while the pouch may be detached, emptied or replaced. Pouch flangers are available in both convex and flat surfaces. Everyone, including those who irrigate, needs some type of stoma pouch - if only for emergency purposes. These pouches do the same function of collecting stool that may expel expectantly or unexpectedly. 3. 3Stoma covers/capsA gauze-type covering can be placed over the stoma and held in place with a waterproof tape or underclothing. Stoma caps are also available. This method may be used when colostomies are regulated and irrigation is used.
  4. 4StorageNeeds to be kept in a cool dry area. Excessive heat may cause deterioration of plastic items and skin care products.
  5. 5Pouch SealThere are several factors to consider can influence how long the pouch will stay sealed. These include:
    Hot weather causing perspiration
    Oily or dry skin
    Scars healing / reduced elasticity
Weight changes either increased or decreased affect the abdominal contours
Physical activity such as swimming, high impact exercise causes perspiration
  6. 6Intestinal GasThe early weeks and months after surgery, they may experience excessive gas. This will lessen after the bowel has had time to heal and resumed a regular diet.
  7. 7OdourCertain foods produce more gas and odour than others. Also medication such as antibiotics and vitamins cause stools to have odour. To avoid smells there are options to us Bismuth Subgallate (orally) or deodorant drops in the pouch.
  8. 8Phantom"Phantom" rectal sensation is similar to the "phantom" limb sensation of amputees who feel as if their removed limb is still there. This is normal and can occur for years after surgery. If the rectum has not been removed, they may have the feeling and may pass mucus when sitting on the toilet. Research has shown by just sitting on the toilet (even those who have had their rectum removed) is relieved by acting as if an evacuation has taken place.
