Question Answer
~つ general counter (ex. apples, cake) *when in doubt use ~つ
~枚(まい) for flat objects (shirts, paper)
~冊(さつ) for books, with a large volume (ex. dictionary)
~本(ほん・ぼん・ぽん) for long cylindrical items (ex. pencils)
~匹(ひき、びき、ぴき) for small animals
~だい for vehicles/machines (ex. bus)
~個(こ) for small round objects (ex. apples)
