Question Answer
How many major oceans are there? 5 Major oceans
Where did the oceans come from Mostly volcanic and rock outgassing, but also comet impacts
Why can't comets be a main source of Earths water? Comets have too much H^3 to be the total source of Earths water
Where is the deepest part of the ocean? The Mariana trench
When did oceans start forming? about 4.2-4.4 billion of years of go.
What is the largest and deepest ocean? The Pacific Ocean
What is the smallest ocean? The Arctic ocean
What do scientists measure in the ocean? Temperature, samples of ocean water, sediments, marine organisms
What does SONAR stand for? Sound Navigation And Ranging
Bathymetry The measurement of ocean depths and charting the shape of the ocean floor
What is SONAR, and how does it work? SONAR is used to meausre the depth by reflecting sounds from the ocean floor. We measure the time it takes for sound waves to travel from the transmitter to the floor to find the depth.
What are continental margins? Shallow parts of the ocean floor made of continental crust and sediment.
What is a passive continental margin? Passive continental margins are mostly found in coastal areas in the Atlantic Ocean, not associated with plate boundries, and have few earthques and volcanic activity.
What is an active continental margin? Active margins are mostly in the Pacific ocean, accumulates a lot of sedement are have lots of volcanic/earthquakes.
What is a deep ocean basin? A deep ocean basin is made of oceanic crust and a sediment later, is deeper part behond the continental margin.
What are the three different types of sediments? Inorganic sediments, Biogenic sediments, seafloor sendiments.
