Question Answer
MITOSIS The cell division in which one parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
Interphase: It is a phase in which the cells rest, since no apparent change in chromosomes is visible externally.
Stage 1: Prophase ( Pro - first) [Early] The chromosomes duplicate to form chromatids. The centrosomes duplicate to form centrioles.
Stage 1: Prophase [Late] Spindle fibres appear. The chromatids start to migrate towards the equator of the cell.
Stage 2: Metaphase (Meta - After) The chromatids align at the centre. Each gets attached to a spindle fibre by it's centromere.
Stage 3: Anaphase (Ana - back) The chromatids separate back into chromosomes and start moving 'back' to the poles of the cell by the contraction of the spindle fibres.
Stage 4: Telophase The spindle fibres disappear. The cleavage appears and the nucleoli reappear.
Stage * : Cytokinesis (Cell movement) The cells move apart from each other and separate.
Significance of Mitosis: Growth Repair Replacement Reproduction These are also the reasons for why new cells need to be produced.
