Question Answer
Aphotic zone Is the portion of a lake or ocean where there is little or no sunlight. It is formally defined as the depths beyond which less than 1 percent of sunlight penetrates.
Biodiversity Biodiversity is the shortened form of two words "biological" and "diversity". It refers to all the variety of life that can be found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms) as well as to the communities that they form and the habitats in which they live.
Biome A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g. forest or tundra.
Chaparral A dense impenetrable thicket of shrubs or dwarf trees
Chemosynthesis Involves the use of energy released by inorganic chemical reactions to produce food.
Climate The average weather in a given area over a longer period of time.
Coral reef A ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral.
Desert Areas that receive very little precipitation
Desertification Land degradation in typically dry areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities.
Estuary Is an area where a freshwater river or stream meets the ocean.
Eutrophic lake Describing a situation where of a water body has lost so much of its dissolved oxygen that normal aquatic life begins to die off.
Grassland A large open area of country covered with grass, especially one used for grazing.
Gyre A circular or spiral motion or form; especially : a giant circular oceanic surface current.
Hydrothermal vent community Occur at both diverging and converging plate boundaries.
Kelp forest Are large brown algae that live in cool, relatively shallow waters close to the shore.
Intertidal zone Is the area that is exposed to the air at low tide and underwater at high tide (the area between the low and high tide lines). This area can include many different types of habitats, including steep rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, or wetlands
Limnetic zone The open water area where light does not generally penetrate all the way to the bottom.
Littoral zone The littoral zone or nearshore is the part of a sea, lake, or river that is close to the shore.
Nearshore zone The shoreline area that encompasses the foreshore
Northern coniferous forest The northern coniferous forest biome occupies a vast area below the tundra, extending completely across Canada and into interior Alaska. The biome is also referred to as the boreal forest or taiga. Compared to the arctic tundra, the climate of the boreal forest is characterized by a longer and warmer growing season.
Oligothrophic lake Those that are unproductive: net primary production is only between 50 and 100 milligrams of carbon per square metre per day, nutrients are in poor supply, and secondary production is depressed.
Open ocean Is the area of the ocean outside of coastal areas. The open ocean lies over the continental shelf
Ozone hole A region of marked thinning of the ozone layer in high latitudes, chiefly in winter, attributed to the chemical action of chlorofluorcarbons and other atmospheric pollutants. The resulting increase in ultraviolet light at ground level gives rise to an increased risk of skin cancer.
Ozone layer A thin part of the Earth's atmosphere that absorbs almost all of the sun's harmful ultraviolet light
Permafrost permanently frozen layer below Earth's surface. It consists of soil, gravel, and sand, usually bound together by ice.
Photic zone Relating to, or involving light especially in relation to organisms.
Phytoplankton In a balanced ecosystem, they provide food for a wide range of sea creatures. Phytoplankton, also known as microalgae, are similar to terrestrial plants in that they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow
Plankton Plankton are marine drifters — organisms carried along by tides and currents. ... Plankton are usually microscopic, often less than one inch in length, but they also include larger species like some crustaceans and jellyfish.
Profundal zone The bottom and deepwater area of freshwater ecosystems that lies beyond the depth of effective light penetration (see compensation level). In shallow freshwater systems, such as ponds, this zone may be missing.
Rain shadow A rain shadow is a patch of land that has been forced to become a desert because mountain ranges blocked all plant-growing, rainy weather.
Savanna A treeless plain especially in Florida. 2a : a tropical or subtropical grassland (as of eastern Africa or northern South America) containing scattered trees and drought-resistant undergrowth.
Temperate deciduous forest Is a biome that is always changing. It has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. Winters are cold and summers are warm. Temperate deciduous forests get between 30 and 60 inches of precipitation a year.
Forest A large area covered chiefly with trees and undergrowth.
Temperate rain forest Temperate broad-leaved forests, sometimes called temperate rainforests, are dominated by evergreen vegetation. These forests grow in regions where year-round rainfall is high and steady and frost is rare.
Tropical scrub forest The tropical scrub forest is a biome that makes up the arid land. This type of biome consists of desert region and areas of low-lying regions, there are dense bushes which are growing over these places
Tundra Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturi, meaning treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic material functions as a nutrient pool.
Upwelling Upwelling is a process in which deep, cold water rises toward the surface
Wetlands Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season.
Plankton Small (often microscopic) plants and animals floating, drifting or weakly swimming in bodies of fresh or salt water.
