Question Answer
Describe how ATP functions Begin
Step 1 Calcium ions bind to the enzyme, the ATP-binding site is activated
Step 2 The terminal phosphate group of the ATP binds to the enzyme, causing a shape change that transports Ca++ to the exterior
Step 3 The calcium ions are released to the exterior
Step 4 The shape change is reversed and the phosphate group is released
Once the outermost phosphate group has split off, ATP becomes ADP
ATP can be defined as a nucleotide that functions as the most important energy transfer molecule in living things
