The forearm

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1What is the mobile wad?- Consists of three muscles:
    - Brachioradialis
    - Extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB)
    - Extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL)
    - Grouped together because move during pronation and supination -> their function changes w/their position
    - Means that these extensor muscles can have minimal flexor function
  2. 2Why are extensor carpi radialis brevis and longus considered a part of the mobile wad?- They act as weak flexors at elbow joint
    - Brevis moves arm from ulnar abduction to its mid-position + flexes dorsally
    - Longus=weak pronator in flexed arm but supinator in outstretched arm
  3. 3Why is the brachioradialis muscle considered a part of the mobile wad- Inserted distally on radius muscle unlike other muscles of the mobile wad ->thus acts only on forearm
    - Brings forearm into midposition btwn supination and pronation ->in this position, acts as a flexor
    - Additionally, in slow movements + in supinated forearm -> has minimal flexor action
  4. 4What is the bicipitoradial bursa?- A bursa located between the distal tendon of the biceps brachii muscle and the anterior part of the tuberosity of the radius
    - It ensures frictionless motion between the biceps tendon and the proximal radius during pronation and supination of the forearm.
    What is the bicipitoradial bursa?
  5. 5What is the anular/annular ligament?- Annular ligament of radius
    - Encircles proximal head of radius
    - Attaches at anterior and posterior margins of the radial notch of the ulna
    - The head of the radius rotates in the ‘socket’ created by the annular ligament
  6. 6The muscles in the forearm can be divided in several ways, what are they?- Anterior and posterior
    - Flexors and extensors
    - Within either of the above two groups, muscles can be sorted based on how superficially or deeply they lie under the skin - anterior/flexors -> superficial, intermediate and deep + posterior/extensors -> superficial and deep
  7. 7What are the muscles in the anterior arm and what groups can they be sorted into?- All muscles in anterior arm are flexors
    - THEN:
    .Superficial: flexor carpi ulnaris,
palmaris longus, flexor carpi radialis, pronator teres.
    .Intermediate: flexor digitorum superficialis.
.Deep: flexor pollicis longus, flexor digitorum profundus and pronator quadratus.
  8. 8What are the muscles in the posterior arm and what groups can they be sorted into?- All muscles in the posterior arm are extensors
    - THEN:
.Superficial: brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor digitorum,
    extensor digiti minimi,
    extensor carpi ulnaris
.Deep: supinator, abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, extensor pollicis longus and extensor indicis.
    - Anconeus also sometimes incl. in posterior forearm but sometimes posterior arm, some consider it just continuation of triceps brachii
