What Started WWI? Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Triple Entente A military alliance between Great Britain, France, and Russia in the years preceding World War I.
Austria-Hungary This Central Power empire during WWI, started the war with their invasion of Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 . It was made up of Austria, Hungary and several other nations and territories. After World War I it split up into several nations.
Nationalism A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country.
What view did the U.S. hold in the beginning of the war? Explain your answer. Isolationism and Neutrality; keeping out of the war and staying neutral. Of those who did pick sides, most were for the Allies.
What actions led to the U.S. joining the war? Zimmerman Telegraph➡ Secret telegraph from Germany to Mexico, promising them land for joining the war. Intercepted by a British vessel. Germany sank four American merchant ships. German U-Boat sank the Lusitania, a British passenger ship carrying over 100 Americans, and over 1,000 Brits.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand This is the Arch Duke of Austria who was assassinated by the Serbians in 1914. This was the main cause of the start of World War I. The countries' allies then joined war against their allies' enemies.
Central Powers Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary.
Allied Powers France, Great Britain, Russia, United States, and Italy.
President Wilson 28th President of the United States led the United States in World War I and secured the formation of the League of Nations (1856-1924) and its 14 points.
Serbia An independent Country.
Trench Warfare Fighting with trenches, mines, and barbed wire. Horrible living conditions, great slaughter, no gains, stalemate, used in WWI.
The Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen had 80 kills and one of the most famous aces. German ace.
Lusitania British passenger ship holding Americans that sunk off the coast of Ireland in 1915 by German U-Boats killing 1,198 people. It was decisive in turning public favor against Germany and bringing America into WWI.
What were the underlying causes of WWI? Militarism, Alliance System, Imperialism, Nationalism
Militarism A policy of glorifying military power and keeping a standing army always prepared for war.
Alliance System A formal agreement between two or more nations or powers to cooperate and come to one another's defense.
Imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
What was WWI called? The Great War.
How did the U.S. get soldiers for WWI? They volunteered, and we had a draft; The Selective Service Act.
Who was President during World War I? President Wilson.
What was the Treaty of Versailles? The treaty was created by the Allies to end the war, by dividing up land and holding Germany responsible for WWI, forcing them to give land and pay the Allies $33 Million.
Why did the U.S. disagree with the Treaty of Versailles? We did not agree, because we thought it too harsh.
What WWI camp is located in Anniston, Alabama? Camp McClellan
What happened in the U.S. during WWI? Women and African Americans worked in Factories. Factories started making War Materials. People planted Victory Gardens to conserve. War bonds were bought to help fun the war.
When did the U.S. enter the war? April 6, 1917.
