What is personification? Describing non-human things as if they were alive or human. Giving non-human things human qualities
What is a simile? Makes comparisons between ideas and objects for a particular purpose. the words; like, or as, are often used.
What is a metaphor? Saying something is something else. It is a more direct comparison between two things.
What is alliteration? The use of the same letter or sound in two or more words that are close together. It is indicated by repeated consonants and suggests a mood or an emotion.
What is assonance? Repetition of vowels in words that are close together.
What is symbolism? This is the use of expressions which represent or recall certain ideas. Symbolic language appeals to our understanding and our imagination.
What is imagery? Visually descriptive or figurative language.
What is Onomatopoeia? The use of words that sound like the action they are representing.
What is hyperbole? Extreme exaggeration. Hyperbole makes the emotion in the poem more easily identifiable because it is another form of emphasis.
What is a synonym? a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.
What is an antonym? A word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the exact opposite of another word or phrase in the same language.
What is ambiguity? The quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness. When a word has more than one meaning.
What is 1st person narration? A mode whereby a story is a time, speaking fro and about the narrated by one character at a time, speaking for and about themselves.
What is 3rd person narration? A type of narrative in which the story is related by an omniscient narrator, using third-person forms. It is a category used in classifying verbs and personal pronouns that are referring to a third party.
What is tone? It is the way the writer sounds through the writing. It might be annoyed, angry, comic, ironic or sarcastic.
What is Pun? A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.
